Chapter Eleven

I didn’t know why they called it the walk of shame. Although I had to sneak out of Fannar’s room in the early morning while it was still dark, so people didn’t spot me leaving his room, I was striding through with pride and a skip in my step. When I reached my dorm, I knocked on the door, in case Iris had a wild night as well. Shuffling and muffled voices immediately followed.

“It’s okay.” I called in, “It’s just me.”

The shuffling calmed down a bit, then Iris opened the door with a shy smile.

“Oh, Helena! Come in, quick!”

When I hustled in, I saw Guiden with his pants disheveled and pulling his shirt over his bedhead.

“Guiden, hurry and get out of here before we all get in trouble!”

“We know!” Iris giggled, “He’s leaving!”

They both started giggling like school children, then shared a little kiss before Guiden snuck out of the room.

Once Iris closed the door, I cocked an eyebrow at her. She caught my eye and broke out into sheepish laughter.

“I’m guessing it went well?” I asked.

“I don’t kiss and tell!” Iris squeaked before looking over to me, “Were you with Fannar last night?”

“I was.”

Iris smiled at me and flopped back on her bed. “I’m happy for you guys.”

“I’m happy for you guys too.”

Iris fell back asleep as I quickly changed out of my dress to catch a few more hours of sleep.

We wound up sleeping in that morning, skipping breakfast, and headed to the cafeteria for an early lunch. Once we got to the front of the line, even Frankie still looked like he was hungover.

“Hey, Frankie,” Iris said.

He gave a grunting warble, flapping a hand.

“Chef’s salad, please,” Iris requested.

He conjured up the salad, then rubbed his yellow eyes with a red thumb and forefinger.

“Good morning, can I have a ham and cheese sandwich?” I asked.

Frankie nodded, then summoned my order for me. I picked it up, but before I left, I said. “Hey. Great music last night, Frankie!”

The little gremlin finally gave me a genuine smile.

Yes! He likes me! Finally!

Once we entered the dining area to sit down, a disturbing silence rang out. Iris looked around anxiously as the silence took hold. I was scared to look around, but when I did, I saw all eyes on me. My heart sank to the bottom of my shoes.

Oh, crap.

“Why are they staring at you?” Iris whispered to me, as we quickly grabbed at a table. “Do you think it’s because of Fannar?”

“What else would it be?” I muttered.

“This looks really bad.”

“Yeah, I need to find Fannar and see if he knows what’s going on. This is way worse than last time there were just rumors about us.”

“Yeah, let’s eat fast and get out of here.”

Under the watchful eyes of everyone there, Iris and I ate at record speed. We hurried out of the cafeteria to Fannar’s room at the boys’ dorm. Fannar let us in and Guiden was already in his room.

“Everyone was staring at Helena during lunch!” Iris recounted to the others.
